How to Find Better Tennis Matches Without Wasting a Week Messaging

Rich Benvin

The hardest part of recreational tennis is often not the forehand, the serve or the score. It is getting four compatible people onto the same court at the same time. A long contact list does not solve the problem when nobody knows who is available, what level everyone plays or whether a player wants relaxed hitting or serious match practice.

Start with the five pieces that actually matter

A useful player request should include location, format, level, availability and intention. “Anyone want to hit?” forces everyone else to ask follow-up questions. “Delray Beach, Tuesday at 9:00 a.m., competitive 4.0 doubles, one player needed” can produce an answer in minutes.

  • Location: city, neighborhood or public facility—not a home address.
  • Format: singles, doubles, drilling, sets or cardio.
  • Level: WTN, UTR, NTRP or an honest self-rating.
  • Availability: specific windows rather than “sometime this week.”
  • Intensity: social, competitive, tournament preparation or teaching-friendly.

Compatibility is more than a rating

Two players can have nearly identical ratings and still want different experiences. One may want uninterrupted baseline repetitions; the other wants to play points after five minutes. Reliability matters too. A slightly wider rating gap with a punctual, communicative player is often a better match than a perfect number who cancels twice.

Tennis Playmate is being built around that complete picture. RallyMatch will combine rating proximity with schedule, distance, format, preferred courts and playing intention. Each recommendation should explain why it works instead of hiding behind a mysterious algorithm.

Better matching creates more tennis. More tennis creates stronger players and stronger communities.

Until the full app arrives, use the Phase 1 player finder, join a Mini-Club or list a focused open match. The best network begins with one game that actually happens.
